Gene Likens

American Experimenter

Dr. Gene Likens is a leading pioneer in long-term multidisciplinary ecological studies. He’s known for co-discovering acid rain in North America and identifying fossil fuel combustion as the cause of increasing precipitation acidity. We had the pleasure of interviewing and working with him to make a documentary about his work.

Excerpt from my work with Dr. Likens and the Science History Institute.

Discovery of Acid Rain

Dr. Likens discovered acid rain in North America. It has influenced government policy, particularly the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990. Likens’ world-renowned work at the site examines the effects of air pollution and land use on watershed ecosystems.
